CANTER’s equine-assisted nonprofit programs work to transform the lives of individuals navigating significant physical and emotional challenges – at no charge to our participants.
Programs teach basic horsemanship skills to both individuals and groups. Through hands-on interaction with horses, participants build confidence, develop emotional awareness, and gain valuable coping skills in a supportive environment.
Sessions are intentionally designed to:
Improve social, emotional, and physical well-being
Help forge new and supportive relationships among participants as well as between participants and the horses they work with
Create an ongoing sense of agency and purpose within participants
Horses provide a calming presence, responding to participants' behaviors and emotions without any bias or judgment regarding their feelings. Participants engage nonverbally with the horse, establishing a unique bond that fosters connection and understanding.
Horses are keen observers and highly attuned to both movement and emotion. They often reflect a participant's behavior or feelings, creating a sense of understanding and connection. This mirroring allows participants to feel secure and helps bring to light any emotions they might be experiencing.
Horses can serve as a valuable touchstone for processing emotions. When participants find it too challenging to discuss painful feelings directly, they often find it easier to relate their experiences to those of the horse. By using the horse as a reference point, individuals can externalize their emotions, making the process more manageable and approachable. This connection allows for a deeper exploration of their feelings in a less intimidating way.
Participants will gain a deeper understanding of adaptability by aligning their needs with those of the horses. Horses are constantly evolving and behaving in unpredictable ways, providing a unique opportunity to develop awareness of their requirements. Impulse control is also essential; despite their size, horses are sensitive prey animals that can easily become skittish in stressful situations. This sensitivity encourages participants to remain calm and adjust their impulses accordingly.
Caring for an animal involves taking on responsibility and provides a valuable opportunity for participants to acquire and develop new skills.
Social awareness/Social relationships
Participants will build social connections with volunteers, staff, and fellow participants. Being around horses can serve as a bridge to encourage open communication and foster friendships.
CANTER programs and services are provided free of charge to families, thanks to the generous support of community donors. These contributions help cover essential costs such as barn fees, program materials, staff training, and other necessary expenses required to deliver our life-changing programs. Thank you for believing in and supporting our mission.
