CANTER founder and Executive Director Brent Applegate has long understood the healing power of horses and the heroic role they can play in helping people overcome significant physical and mental challenges in their lives. For over 20 years his equine assisted physical therapy practice has leveraged the sensitive and intuitive nature of horses – helping patients overcome and manage physical limitations. Deeply impacted and driven by the suicide death of a local teen, he saw opportunity to further harness the powers of connection and empathy horses possess. Brent started CANTER to serve as an accessible resource for individuals navigating emotional challenges such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and grief. CANTER’s goal is to transform lives and build stronger, more resilient communities. Our four hooved heroes are instrumental in this work – serving as partners to develop and enhance the physical and mental well-being of individuals we serve.
